A. BULLETIN DESCRIPTION: Examines business concepts as reflected in film. Perspective is both historical and contemporary and focuses on sociological, psycho-logical and philosophical events, trends, values and changes that have taken place in the business world.
B. OUTCOMES: Students will…
1. Identify the types of ethical concerns and social responsibilities that arise in the business world.
2. Describe the negotiating process involved in labor- management disputes.
3. Identify leadership styles as portrayed in the films’ leading characters.
4. Identify key management functions such as goal setting and planning, organizing, leading, motivating and controlling as depicted in the selected films.
5. Explain the major components of human resource management as well as the challenges of cultural diversity in the workplace.
6. Describe the nature of a small business and the reasons that some succeed while others fail.
7. Explain and describe the elements of entrepreneurship as characterized by the film protagonists.

D. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:
1. Observation of selected films from course film library.
2. Class discussion of films including relevant reading materials.
3. Lectures to elucidate concepts described in the films, textbook, and ancillary reading materials.
4. Oral presentations and debates on related topics.
5. Written reports and analyses of films.
6. Assigned readings selected by the professor
7. Guest speakers invited to talk about relevant topics.
8. Distribution of articles and critiques identified in leading business journals.
9. Use of other related audiovisual materials where available.
E. METHODS OF EVALUATION:
1. Class participation – 20%
2. Reaction Logs - 30%
3. Final Examination – 50%
• 0 absences / 0 lateness – add 10 points to final average.
• 1 absence limit!
• 2 absences – subtract 10 points to final average.
• 3 absences - requires student to withdraw from class.
• 2 lateness = 1 absence
• No make-up examinations.
• All cell phones & beepers must be turned OFF.
