Life Span Extension and Genetic Alteration of
Foods and Bacteria
Objectives:
- To utilize the worldwide web as a research tool.
- To apply basic genetic knowledge to understand the current reserach on human lifespan extension, and the genetic manipulation of food and bacteria.
- To work in groups to divide up the issues and then to debate, in the laboratory class, the potentially positive and negative effects of such research.
Materials:
- Computer and ISP.
Methods:
- Gather information about one of the three possible
areas: life span extension, genetic modification of foods, or genetic
modification of bacteria. The following sites can help you get started:
- For life span extension, visit aeiveos.com.
- Regarding the genetic manipulation of foods, visit mofga.org.
- You will find many sites regarding the peaceful uses of genetically altered bacteria. However, regarding weaponized bacteria, start out visiting this governmental site.
- Part of one laboratory class will be used to place you into a debating group.
- Each student will have an opportunity to express an opinion in debate format in a laboratory class to follow.
